My Shopify Payments Payouts Are on Hold. What Do I Do?

Short answer: Shopify has either paused your payouts while it reviews your account, or put some (or all) of your sales in a reserve for a set time. Your store usually keeps working, but the money doesn't reach your bank until the hold ends or you send what Shopify asked for. Start by reading the exact notice in your Shopify admin and the email sent to the store owner.

Hold or reserve? Find out which one you have

Shopify uses two different tools, and each one needs a different response.

A payout hold (account review)

Shopify says payouts "can be temporarily held while your account undergoes review." It lists reasons such as chargeback disputes, compliance checks, customer complaints, high-risk orders, fulfilment issues, investigations by its financial partners, and onboarding that needs more documents. Shopify also names incorrect bank details, product eligibility, unsupported business types, sanctions, and creditor or legal action.

Shopify says the fastest way to resolve a hold is "to provide any information that's been requested, and to reply directly to any email from Shopify."

A reserve

Shopify calls a reserve "a temporary hold on a portion, in some cases a full amount" of your Shopify Payments transactions "for a specified period." It can be a fixed amount or a percentage of each sale. Shopify's own examples use 120 days. The terms come to you by email.

You can see it under Finance > Payouts > Reserve in your Shopify admin. Your total balance is your Pending amount plus your Reserve amount. You can export your reserve transactions as a CSV.

A slower payout schedule

For businesses it sees as higher risk, Shopify says it may set a custom payout schedule of 5 to 20 business days.

How long will it last?

Numbers online vary. Go by the date in your own email. Shopify says that before a reserve ends, it reviews your account and may keep, reduce or raise the reserve. If there's no extension, the reserved money goes into your upcoming payouts, which can take several business days.

Can I appeal?

Sometimes. Shopify says that to appeal a reserve, you reply to the reserve email within the timeframe it gives. Some reserves can't be appealed. If the email lists requirements instead of inviting an appeal, meet those requirements and Shopify says the reserve is removed automatically.

Step by step: what to do now

  1. Save the notice. Screenshot the admin banner and save the email. Note the date, the amount, the reserve percentage or amount, and any end date.
  2. Work out the type: payout hold, reserve, or slower payout schedule.
  3. Check your bank details under Shopify Payments. A failed payout is a separate, easier fix.
  4. Gather your proof in one folder:
    • Supplier invoices or receipts for the products you sold
    • Fulfilment records with tracking numbers and delivery confirmations
    • Your refund, return and shipping policies (screenshots of the live pages)
    • Customer messages that show you resolved problems
    • Your business registration and ID, if you're asked to verify
    • An export of your recent orders, refunds and chargebacks
  5. Explain anything unusual in two or three sentences. For example: "Sales went up after a product launch on [date]. Here are the supplier invoices and tracking for those orders."
  6. Reply to Shopify's email, in the same thread. Answer exactly what it asks, attach clearly named files (for example 01-supplier-invoice-march.pdf), and send everything at once.
  7. Keep a log of every date, message and request ID.
  8. Follow up in writing on the date you were given. Stay calm and stick to facts.

What NOT to do

  • Don't open a new store or Shopify Payments account to get around the hold.
  • Don't share your Shopify login, staff access or email password with anyone. Shopify says only the store owner can see some account details, and no genuine helper needs your login.
  • Be careful with "fund recovery" services that promise to get your money released, ask for your login, or want a percentage. The FTC warns that recovery scammers often target people who are already losing money.
  • Don't send altered or "cleaned up" documents. Send real records, readable and complete.

FAQ

Can customers still check out?

In most cases, yes. Shopify says customers can usually still check out while payouts are on hold, but in some cases your store can't take new orders. Your admin banner or email will tell you which applies.

My email gives a hold length I can't find on Shopify's help pages. Which is right?

The one in your email. Shopify doesn't publish a single fixed length for every case, and it reviews reserves before they end.

Will Shopify still take chargebacks out of my money?

Yes. Shopify says a dispute amount and its fees are taken from your account, and the reserve exists to cover refunds and disputes.

Can HoldFile release my Shopify payouts?
