Etsy Put a Reserve on My Payment Account. What Do I Do?

Short answer: Etsy is holding a percentage of each new physical-item sale for a while instead of letting you deposit it right away. The quickest fix Etsy gives is to add valid tracking. When Etsy can see an order is in transit, it releases that order's reserved money. Without tracking, the money is released after a default holding period. Etsy says that for most sellers the reserve is removed within 90 days.

What the reserve is

Etsy says that with a Payment account reserve, "a percentage of funds from each new sale of a physical item will be held" and won't be available within the usual time. Digital item sales aren't reserved. Etsy describes the reserve as set aside on a rolling basis, and one of its help pages says this can last up to 45 days per sale.

Money is released when either:

  • You add tracking and Etsy can see the order is in transit, or
  • There's no tracking and the default holding period has passed.

Funds become available at 6pm ET on the day they're released.

Why Etsy placed it

Etsy says reserves are based on risk factors such as:

  • Your first sale on Etsy
  • A sudden sharp increase in orders or refunds
  • Orders often missing tracking or tracking events
  • Orders not shipped on time
  • A recent rise in refunds
  • A notice of counterfeit, unauthorised reproduction or alleged intellectual property infringement

Etsy says Support can't tell you the specific reason, and Etsy Support agents can't remove a reserve. Etsy reviews reserves regularly and may adjust or remove them. It also says a reserve won't be placed on a Star Seller's shop.

Where to see it

  • Shop Manager > Finances > Payment account, in the "Payment account reserve" section. It shows the holding time and percentage.
  • Orders: look for the "Order in reserve" badge.
  • Monthly statement CSV (Finances > Monthly statements > Generate CSV). The Status and Availability Date columns show what's reserved and when it should be released.

Step by step: what to do now

  1. Save Etsy's email and screenshot the reserve section. Note the percentage and holding time.
  2. Add valid tracking to every open order. Etsy says this is how to release funds sooner. Etsy shipping labels (US, Canada, Australia, UK) may include tracking. Etsy can't always confirm tracking for some carriers, so choose one whose tracking shows scan events.
  3. Ship within your processing times. If you can't, change your processing times instead of marking orders shipped early. Etsy specifically says not to mark items shipped before you drop them off.
  4. Reply to buyers fast, within 24 hours if you can, and settle problems before they turn into cases.
  5. Keep proof together in case Etsy asks or a case opens: receipts for postage, tracking and delivery confirmations, photos of items before shipping, supplier or material invoices, and buyer messages.
  6. If you got an IP or counterfeit notice, save it and gather proof that you made or are allowed to sell the item, such as design files, licences or receipts.
  7. Check your billing card is valid. Etsy can charge it if your balances can't cover refunds and fees.
  8. If funds stay held after tracking shows delivery, contact Etsy Support through Shop Manager with the order numbers and tracking. Keep a log of what you sent and when.

What NOT to do

  • Don't open another shop to get around the reserve.
  • Don't mark orders as shipped before they really are.
  • Don't share your Etsy login or one-time codes with anyone who says they can "unlock" your account.
  • Be careful with "recovery" services that promise to get the reserve removed or want a share of your money. The FTC warns about recovery scams.

FAQ

How long will the Etsy reserve last?

Etsy says most reserves are removed within 90 days, but it can extend one if it has concerns about fulfilment or policy issues. Each sale's release date is in Recent activities or your monthly statement.

Why is my balance going negative?

Etsy says refunds, fees, Etsy labels and Etsy Ads still come out of your current balance during a reserve. Reserved money covers them as it's released.

Can I appeal the reserve?

Etsy says Support agents can't remove a reserve. What helps is shipping on time with tracking, good service and keeping your shop in good standing.
