My Stripe Payout Is Paused. What Should I Do?
Your customers are paying you, but the money isn't reaching your bank. Stripe says your payouts are paused, or your payout date keeps moving. Before you panic, find out which kind of pause you have. Each one has a different fix.
First, find out why
Stripe's own help page on late or missing payouts gives the first step: check both your Dashboard and your email to see if Stripe has asked you for more information.
These are the most common reasons Stripe describes:
1. Stripe needs more information
Stripe says payouts may be paused if it is "missing required information" about you or your tax status, or if other account requirements are due. Your account may still take payments while payouts are paused, but you can't move the money out until the pause is lifted.
2. Your balance is negative
If refunds, disputes or fees take your balance below zero, Stripe may start a withdrawal from your bank. Stripe says upcoming payouts in that currency are paused until the withdrawal is done. It says withdrawals usually take around three business days to clear, and payouts then go back to your normal schedule.
3. A payout failed
If your bank can't accept a payout, the money goes back to Stripe. Stripe says to check your bank details, re-enter them if needed, and click Resume Payouts.
4. A reserve
A reserve is different from a pause. Stripe calls it "a temporary hold on a portion of a business's funds" to cover possible refunds and disputes. Stripe says it emails you the terms, and you can see the reserve in the Reserve section at the bottom of your Balance page. Stripe reviews the reserve a few days before it ends and may remove it, lower it or raise it.
Stripe lists reasons a reserve may be added, including longer delivery times in your industry, a higher risk of not fulfilling orders, more disputes, and "an unexplainable sharp increase in processing volume."
5. Your first payout
Stripe says there is usually a 7 to 14 day waiting period for a new account's first payout.
6. You get paid through another platform
Some apps and marketplaces use Stripe to pay their sellers. If that platform paused your payouts, Stripe tells you to direct your questions to the platform.
Simple steps to take now
- Read the notice. Check your Stripe Dashboard notifications and your email. Save the exact wording, the date and the amount.
- Work out the type: missing information, negative balance, failed payout, reserve, first payout, or a platform pause.
- If Stripe asked for something, answer that exact request. Send it all at once, clearly labelled.
- Make your website easy to check. Stripe advises showing your shipping terms, return policy and refund policy clearly.
- Gather proof: receipts, agreements, proof of shipment, supplier invoices and customer messages.
- Explain anything unusual. Did you refund someone who paid twice? Did sales jump after a launch? Write down why, and save the records.
- Keep a log of every date, message and promise.
- Follow up in writing on the date Stripe gave you. Stay calm and factual.
- Don't open a new account to get around the pause.
FAQ
Can I still take payments while payouts are paused?
Often yes. Stripe says an account may keep receiving payments while payouts are paused. A reserve also does not stop you from taking payments, according to Stripe.
How long will a reserve last?
Stripe's email should give the time period. Stripe reviews the reserve before it ends. It may remove, lower or extend it, and in rare cases keep it longer.
I refunded a customer and now my payouts stopped. Why?
A refund can push your balance below zero, and Stripe may pause payouts until it recovers the amount. Save both payment records and a short note explaining the refund.
Can HoldFile unpause my Stripe payouts?
No. Only Stripe (or the platform that pays you) can do that. We help you put together a clear, organised answer.
