My eBay Payout Is on Hold. What Does It Mean?
The buyer paid, but your eBay funds say On hold, or your payouts have stopped. eBay uses a few different kinds of holds, and each one has a different cause. Knowing which one you have is the first step.
Where to check
eBay says you can see when your funds should be released in Seller Hub or in Payments in My eBay. On its help page there is a "Check payment holds" button that shows the expected date and any payout hold.
The main types of eBay holds
Transaction holds (on a sale)
eBay says the buyer has paid but the funds "aren't yet available for payout." In most cases the money is released after the buyer gets the item. eBay may hold one high-priced order, or all of a seller's orders for a time (for example, new sellers or sellers with a recent suspension).
eBay gives typical times. For example:
- New private sellers: 2 days after delivery confirmation with an eBay label, 7 days with a third-party label, or 31 days after the buyer pays if there is no tracking.
- New business sellers: 24 hours after delivery confirmation with an eBay label, or 15 days after the buyer pays for other shipping.
- After a restriction or suspension is lifted: holds for the next 30 days.
- Unusual sales from a regular seller: eBay says it will email you, then hold funds for future and not-yet-delivered orders until it sees successful deliveries.
Payment dispute holds
If a buyer reports a problem, eBay may hold the funds until the case or dispute is resolved.
Payout holds (on your account)
eBay says payout holds "usually require further seller action." It lists four kinds:
- Registration holds: your details don't match what you gave at sign-up.
- Compliance holds: eBay needs more information to meet legal rules.
- Performance holds: unusual activity, such as more buyer claims, "a sudden change in your selling activity", late deliveries or negative feedback.
- Invalid payment method: eBay can't charge your fees, so you need to add another payment method.
What eBay says helps
eBay recommends sending the item quickly and uploading tracking within your handling time. It says tracking helps decide when funds can be released, and that untracked items generally take longer. You can also use your On hold funds to buy eBay shipping labels, which upload tracking automatically. For local pickup, scanning the buyer's pickup code confirms delivery.
Simple steps to take now
- Click "Check payment holds" in Seller Hub or My eBay. Note the type of hold and the expected date.
- Save every email or notice from eBay. Note the date, amount and reason.
- Upload tracking for every order that doesn't have it yet.
- If eBay asked for information, send exactly what it asked for, all at once and clearly labelled.
- Gather proof: supplier invoices, tracking with delivery confirmation, your returns policy and buyer messages.
- Selling a lot faster than usual? Have your tracking numbers and supplier invoices ready to show the orders are real.
- Keep a log of dates, messages and anything support promised.
- Follow up in writing on the date given. Stay calm and stick to facts.
- Don't open a new account to get around the hold.

eBay says it may hold funds after unusual selling activity, more buyer claims, late deliveries or a recent restriction, even for regular sellers. Check the hold type to see which reason applies.
How do I know when my money will be available?
Use "Check payment holds" in Seller Hub or My eBay. eBay says funds may take longer if it has concerns about an order.
Does tracking really matter?
