PayPal Is Holding My Money for 21 Days. What Do I Do?
You made a sale, the buyer paid, and now PayPal says the money is "on hold". That is stressful when you need it for stock or bills. Here is what PayPal itself says about these holds, and the steps we suggest so you can respond calmly and properly.
Why PayPal holds payments
PayPal says it may hold funds when it needs more information about a transaction, your business or your account activity. The reasons it lists include:
- You are a new seller. You don't have much selling history yet.
- You haven't sold in a while. Your account has been quiet for a long time.
- Disputes, refunds or chargebacks. Several buyers have asked for refunds or filed disputes.
- Your selling pattern changed. For example, a sudden jump in sales, a change in your average price, or a new type of item.
- Higher-risk items. PayPal names tickets, gift cards, consumer electronics, computers and travel packages.
A hold does not always mean you did something wrong. PayPal calls holding a new seller's first payments "a common industry practice" to cover buyer complaints.
How long does the hold last?
PayPal says funds are "usually held for up to 21 days." But not every hold is the same. Check which one you have:
- A payment hold on certain sales. This is the usual "up to 21 days" type.
- A reserve. PayPal keeps part of your money for a set time. It describes rolling, minimum and "jumpstart" reserves.
- An account limitation. PayPal needs documents from you before it will lift some limits.
PayPal's User Agreement also allows longer holds (up to 180 days) in some cases. Your notice's exact words tell you which type you have.
What PayPal says you can do
PayPal's help page on releasing held payments says to log in and click "Know your options" under your PayPal balance. Depending on the sale, you may be able to:
- Add tracking from one of PayPal's approved carriers. PayPal says it releases the hold about 24 hours after the carrier confirms delivery.
- Mark a service or digital sale as Completed. PayPal says it releases the hold 7 days after you confirm.
- Print the shipping label through PayPal. PayPal tracks the item and says it releases the hold about 24 hours after delivery is confirmed.
PayPal adds that "in rare cases" it may still hold a payment for up to 21 days after these steps.
If your account is limited, PayPal lists the documents it wants in the Resolution Center. PayPal says each document must be readable, show all four corners, match your PayPal details, and not have anything blocked out.
Simple steps to take now
- Save the notice. Screenshot the email or message. Note the date, the amount held and any reason given.
- Check "Know your options". Add tracking or mark the order as Completed if that applies to you.
- Don't open a new account to get around the hold. It can make things worse.
- Gather proof that your business is real: supplier invoices, tracking numbers with delivery confirmation, your refund policy and customer messages.
- When PayPal asks for documents, send exactly what it asks for, all at once, clearly labelled.
- Keep a log. Write down every date, every message and every promise support made.
- Follow up in writing on the date they promised. Stay calm and stick to facts.
- Be careful with anyone who promises to "recover your funds" for a percentage.
FAQ
Is my money gone?
A hold means you can't withdraw the money yet. PayPal says many holds last up to 21 days and explains ways to release some of them sooner. The final decision is always PayPal's.
Why did the hold start right after a big sale?
PayPal lists "a recent spike in sales" as one reason a selling pattern can look unusual. Before a big sale or launch, have your tracking numbers and supplier invoices ready.
Can HoldFile get my money released?
No. No one outside PayPal can promise that. We help you put your case in order so it is clear and easy to review.
