Shopify Payments Disabled and My Funds Are Held. What Now?

Short answer: When Shopify turns off Shopify Payments or closes a store, your pending balance is usually held for a period set out in Shopify's email. After that, it's paid to your bank account on file, minus any chargebacks and fees. You can appeal using the form Shopify gives you. Keep your bank account open, save every notice, and send one clear, complete appeal.

Two different situations

Your store is terminated or in "restricted access"

Shopify says stores may be put in restricted access, "without prior communication", for activity that "isn't, or that's suspected not to be, a legitimate commerce practice." Your storefront goes offline, but you keep limited access to your admin, where you can:

  • View your store, billing, payment and payout details
  • Submit your appeal and supporting documents
  • Request a bank account change
  • Track the status of your appeal

Shopify says billing is paused while your store is in restricted access.

Only Shopify Payments is turned off

Sometimes the store stays open but Shopify Payments is disabled. Shopify says that even if a store appeal succeeds, Shopify Payments may stay unavailable, and you can then send a separate appeal for Shopify Payments.

What happens to the money?

The length of the hold is in your email. Merchants on Shopify's forum often quote 120 days, and other periods also appear. Shopify's Payments terms let it and its payment partners hold funds, and take chargebacks, refunds and fees from a reserve. So the amount you finally get can be lower than your current balance.

If the release date passes and nothing arrives, Shopify staff on its forum have advised waiting a few business days for bank processing and then replying using your request ID, because specialist teams handle these cases.

Step by step: what to do now

  1. Save everything. The termination or disabling email, admin screenshots, the date, the balance shown, and any request ID.
  2. Keep the bank account on file open. That's where Shopify says the held funds will be sent. If you need to change it, use the bank account change option in your admin.
  3. Download your records while you still have access: orders, payouts, refunds, chargebacks and customer messages.
  4. Build your proof folder:
    • Supplier invoices, reseller or distributor authorisation for branded goods
    • Tracking numbers and delivery confirmations for recent orders
    • Your refund, shipping and contact pages (screenshots)
    • Business registration, business licence and government ID
    • Your replies to any chargebacks, and the outcomes
  5. Write a short, factual appeal. In plain words, say what you sell, where it comes from, how you fulfil orders, and the facts behind anything Shopify might have flagged (for example a sales spike or one chargeback). Link each statement to a labelled document.
  6. Submit it through the on-screen appeal form (store) or the form or reply in your Shopify Payments email (payments only). If there's no form, Shopify says to reply directly to the email.
  7. Set up another payment provider if you want to keep selling while you wait. Shopify itself suggests this while a reapplication is being reviewed.
  8. Keep a log and follow up in writing on the dates you were given.

Reapplying later

If you're rejected, Shopify says you may be able to reapply after 6 to 12 months of processing with a third-party gateway, with a chargeback rate below 1%, fast fulfilment with tracking, and no negative balances. It also says meeting these rules doesn't guarantee approval.

What NOT to do

  • Don't open a new store with the same details to get around the decision.
  • Don't close the bank account linked to Shopify Payments.
  • Don't give anyone your Shopify login or email password, even someone who says they "know someone at Shopify."
  • Be wary of "recovery" agents who promise to unlock your balance or want a cut of it. The FTC warns about recovery scams that target people who have already lost money.
  • Don't send several angry, half-finished appeals. Send one complete, organised one.

FAQ

Will I get my money back?

Shopify's emails generally say held payouts are paid to your bank account after the hold period, minus chargebacks and fees. Your notice has the exact terms. No outside service can promise the result.

Shopify didn't tell me why. Can I find out?

Your email and admin notice are the main sources. Shopify says the store owner's email and admin notifications are the best place to find the reason, and you can contact Shopify Support if the information isn't clear.

Can I still sell?

Not through a terminated store. If only Shopify Payments is off, you can usually add a third-party payment provider.

Can HoldFile get my store or payments back?
